GRIFFITH captain Tom Spry and his men were left to wonder what might have been after being beaten by Wagga in their O'Farrell Cup challenge at McPherson Oval yesterday.
The home side cruised to a five-wicket win after they were set a below-par score of 142 for victory, with Spry lamenting what another 30 runs might have meant to his side's fortunes.
"I think a par score would have been about 170 so we were a bit short of where I'd like to have been," Spry said after the day's play. "They (Wagga) were bowling pretty tight early, but I don't think our top-order performed as well as it should have, so we got saved a bit by our lower-order.
"But Brendan Hicken and Marc Tucker batted quite well towards the end and I thought Fletcher (Josling) and Mark Wade supported them quite well."
Wagga ripped through the Griffith top-order with Dean Crane, Mick Mattingly and Tim Cameron getting amongst the wickets.
Two fighting knocks to Hicken and Tucker helped get Griffith to a defendable total, as Joel Robinson wrapped up the tail.
Spry backed his side to make early breakthroughs with the ball, but said they did not create their own luck, with dropped catches coming back to hurt Griffith.
"We bowled quite well at the start and we were keeping it tight and got a couple of wickets.
"But a couple of crucial things didn't go our way, Theo Valeri produced an awesome run out but the umpire had his backed turned trying to get out of the way.
"It was at that stage in the game that if we got another wicket, especially a run out, it might have turned things for us."
Robertson (30) and Warren Clunes (43) made the most of their chances as they guided the home side to victory in the 35th over.
Spry said the three Griffith debutants showed they have a big future at representative level, despite the result.
"The new boys performed well really, I thought Pat (Whittard) was looking good at the top of the order, and that's always a tough job to go in their and face the new rock (ball).
"And Fletcher looked good with the bat as when he got his chance and Shaun got a good run out when we needed it.
"I think we have got a pretty good nucleus in that side, adding in a couple of young blokes, so I think we'll have another go (at the O'Farrell Cup) if we can (this year)."
