BIG sixes, bucket hats and blue singlets – it could only be one thing – the Coleambally six-a-side tournament.
The 10th annual event which attracts dozens of wanna-be David Warner’s to the town has been declared another smashing success, with Lake Cargelligo taking the overall honours from the Yenda Jets.
With more slog-sweeps and attempted ramp shots than you could poke a stump at, style took a back seat to entertainment value.
Organiser Michael Hodgson said every team treated the games in the right fashion, with enjoying the day more than important than the result.
“It was a great day in the end, we had a couple of teams pull out at the last minute, but we filled in with other people, but overall it was an awesome day,” Hodgson said.
Hodgson described the stroke play and attire as “ordinary”, with several batsmen opting to do away with at least one pad, a box for the men and in some cases, even shoes.
In the consolation final, No Idea from Coleambally beat Doggie Stylers with Carl Pound awarded the top batsman title after his 54 earlier in the day, with Nathan Jones crowned the best bowler after securing a rare hat-trick.
Adding to the spectacle was the appearance of former Test bowler Jeff Thompson, who mingled with fans during games.
“It was our tenth year we thought we’d try and get somebody like him to come along because we don’t get lot of famous sportspeople out here,” Hodgson said.
“He came along at the end of the day and handed out the awards and had a few drinks with the players and then did a show for a couple of hours after we had finished up.”
