AN ATTACKING half-century to Murrumbidgee's Connor Matheson was not enough to save his side from a first-up defeat in the 2011 Gorrel Cup in Griffith on Monday.
The Leagues Club batsman took the fight up to the Murray attack at Beelbangera Oval and attacked right from the start, however, his exploits could not erase the damage done by a wayward bowling effort earlier in the day.
Murrumbidgee co-coach Richie Alvaro said conceding 30 extras compared to Murray's nine ultimately proved the difference as Murray won by 17 runs.
"Definitely, give credit where credit is due and (Murray opening bowling) Ross (Pawson) bowled very well on synthetic especially, they just did the little things better than what we did yesterday (Monday)," Alvaro said.
"Giving away wides, no balls and byes are non-negotiable, we shouldn't be doing that. So the guys weren't happy with their effort, they realise they can do better than that.
"They did about 90 per cent of the things we asked of them right, but the other 10 per cent are the things that count and look at the other team, that's what they did and that's why they won.
"But the guys are getting the cobwebs out and they are a bit rusty so I'm sure they will do better in the next two days."
Matheson nearly did not make the milestone when he played a drive uppishly to cover, who grassed the chance.
"He (Matheson) played very well, he was actually looking for a bad ball rather than waiting for bad ball like some of the others," Alvaro said.
"Some were in a negative frame of mind but he was positive and said 'OK I'm going to try and make runs here, I'm not looking to get out'."
Murray's Will McIntosh set to the tone for Murray with a well-crafted 51 before being run out by Josh Davis but the consistent good scores continued to flow for the visitors.
Jack Robinson (33), Andrew Mackinlay (18), Pawson (16) and Nathan Brown (17) all chipped in to give Murray a more than competitive total of 182.
In reply, Bidgee's Tom Shannon (28), Tom Bristow (24) along with Matheson were the highlight's with the bat as Murray clinched the win late in the day.
