Leagues to launch an attack on Crack

20 Jan, 2012 06:00 AM
LEAGUES Club captain Matt Vitucci has targeted Diggers’ batsman Matt Crack as the key wicket if his side is to record a morale boosting win this Griffith Cricket season.

After their turn at the crease Leagues look set to lose another first innings contest, after compiling just 104 at West End Oval last weekend.

But a spirited effort with the ball has kept the door open for just their second win for the season.

“The boys didn’t go too well with the bat, but Raj (Singh) and Will McCrohon came out with the ball and bowled well, especially Raj – he did a lot of damage with the ball early on,” Vitucci said. “But Dan Peruzzi and young Keiron Williams backed that up when we gave them a bit of a go as well, which was good to see.

“So from a bowling side of things we were really happy with how we got back into the game.

“The disappointing thing was that we dropped Matt Crack a couple of times, and he’s the key wicket for us really this weekend.

“If we want to win we can’t afford to have any more slip-ups like that in the field.”

With Crack resuming on 22, Diggers need just 38 runs with four wickets in hand but Vitucci promised to keep up his side’s all-out attack approach.

“The way the boys were bowling on Saturday I think we can, especially if they pick up where they left off, we’re still right in with a chance, especially now we’re getting into their tail,” he said.

“That’s what we thought last weekend that we had to attack, with the amount of runs we had to play with we thought there was no point in trying to do it in half measures, we decided to set attacking fields.

“And luckily it paid off for us.”

With the first innings potentially decided within the opening hour of play, the chance of an outright is still on the table, but Vitucci is trying to keep his side focused on the first task.

“It all depends of what happens early really, if we

can knock them over cheaply and get back in there and bat maybe, but we’re just concentrating on trying to get first innings at this stage,” he said.
