THE combined Riverina team, known as the Jumbucks, have come out on top in the Riverina Challenge one-day final in Wagga this week.
The hastily established team of players from around the region were too good for Wagga’s under 15 representative team at McPherson Oval.
The Jumbucks batted first and compiled an imposing 8-195 before bowling the under 15 side out for 158.
It was a high-quality final that saw plenty of runs, good bowling and three extraordinary run-outs.
The under 15s only made it into the final after edging out their older rivals, the Wagga under 16s, by 0.8 of a per cent after the group games.
Each of the three sides had won a game but the under 15s’ come-from-behind win in the opening match against the under 16s proved the difference.
Jumbucks opening batsman Toby Polkinghorne was the standout performer, making a classy 94.
Fellow opener Dan Peruzzi made 23 while the Wagga under 15s attack was led by Eddie Jackson-Brennan (2-8) and Alex Coetzer (2-13).
In reply, Wagga under 15s got off to a good start and were 3-56 after 16 overs.
While the young stars were able to maintain a good run-rate they consistently lost wickets and by the
40th over were hanging by a thread at 9-146.
In the end Wagga under 15s were bowled out for 158 with Tom Byrne top-scoring with 54, while Tom West picked up 3-17.
Three big run-outs by the Jumbucks put the Wagga under 15s under pressure.
Key batsmen Byrne, Coetzer and Brayden Ambler were all run-out by direct hits after making solid starts.
The tri-series will continue today with the first Twenty20 doubleheader at Apex Park.
