THE Yenda Jets have kept their faint finals hopes alive after a low-scoring and hard-fought six-wicket win against Hanwood under lights at Exies No. 1 on Saturday.
After a lacklustre first half of the year the Jets left themselves little margin for error with two months remaining in the Griffith District regular season.
But Tom Spry and his men will gain confidence after dispatching of a Hanwood side who recorded an impressive one-day victory last weekend.
“A win’s a win so we’ll take it,” Spry said.
“They (Hanwood) had a pretty good win last week so I think they were pretty confident.
“They got off to a good start with the bat, but we dropped a couple of catches but then took a couple of really good ones and the guys just bowled really good length.
“And that built the pressure in the middle overs and the wickets followed.”
Winning the toss and batting first, Hanwood opener Brad Hornery looked to continue his excellent form, after scoring a rare one-day century the week before.
But his innings was cut short on 28 when Dean Cunial took a spectacular catch at long-on as he ran back and caught the ball one-handed above and behind his head.
Horner’s wicket changed the momentum of the game in favour of the Jets as Brian Irvin (2-13) capatalised on the weekend work done by Cunial and Justin Wade with the new ball.
“He’s a good steady bowler and he’s got a lot of experience at all levels of cricket up his sleeve, so that always helps when he plays for us,” Spry said of Irvin.
Brendan Hicken also looked to pick up where he left off last weekend but was the first victim of Spry, who claimed
5-15 off 7.2 overs.
Despite several chances hitting the deck, Yenda again pulled out some magic in the field just when it was needed.
Hanwood’s Scott Smith began to look dangerous late in the innings, but on 14 he found the edge off Matt Bruce’s bowling with Pete Vardanega taking a excellent catch at second slip.
“It sort of lifts everybody I think, they know they have made a mistake and dropped the easy one, but Dean’s catch early and Pete made up for it with a screamer and it was an important wicket,” Spry said of his team’s effort in the field.
Needing only 94 for the win, Yenda tinkered with its
batting line-up sending Andrew Potter and Irvin in as openers.
But the moved backfired as Potter was run out and Irvin was knocked over by Alex Vendrasco, who claimed 3-33 off eight overs.
“He (Vendrasco) bowled well early on, but I think we had a bit of David Warner-itis, I know I did anyway,” Spry said.
“We had a couple of guys that normally don’t open the batting up there, so he got Brian (Irvin) and Andrew (Potter) got run out, so it wasn’t the best start.”
But sensible innings by Bruce (33no) and Sean Stubbs (30no) took away any chance Hanwood had of a come-from-behind win.
