 Jets set to fire

Jets set to fire

03 Feb, 2012 05:30 AM
A NEW format of cricket will be played in the Griffith District competition with Exies and Yenda to do battle in a Thirty40 game at Exies No. 2.

It will be a version of the game never featured again with last weekend’s washout bringing on the unusual playing rules in the crucial clash tomorrow.

Last weekend the Jets were able to face 10 overs of their scheduled two-day game against Exies, but when rain forced play to be cancelled, the competition ruled the game be contested as a 40-over a side game.

Jets Tom Spry said he would have liked the game rescheduled as a one-day game, but said not having lost a wicket last weekend it still gives his side a chance to save its finals aspirations.

“It’s quite strange that we find ourselves in this position, because it was probably one of our best starts we’ve had for the year,” Spry said.

“I think with the 10 overs gone and 30 on the board with all 10 wickets remaining, it gives us a pretty good position to maybe launch for the time we’ve got left.

“But I’m a bit surprised that it didn’t go back to a one-dayer like it did between us and Coro a few weeks ago, I would have thought common sense would prevail.

“But I haven’t been in touch with the umpires, I’ll leave it

in their hands and they can deal with it.”

Peter Vardanega and Andrew Potter will resume their innings’ on 7 and 12 respectively, with Exies skipper Marc Tucker saying his side is prepared for a Yenda batting line-up with little to lose.

“I think they might attack but I’m not really sure, because they didn’t really get a lot of runs, but we think we have the attack to knock them over cheaply,” Tucker said.

“We just have to take the chances that come to us and see how it goes.”

The only change for Exies will be the re-inclusion of Jamie Winkler, who returns from Colts representative duty in place of David White.

Asked what he would like to chase when they bat, Tucker said if they can restrict the Jets to around four runs an over tomorrow, his attack will have done its job.

“I think about 150 would be par, but anything below 150 would be a very good score for us to try and chase when it’s our turn to bat,” Tucker said.

Spry said he was setting his sights higher, adding his side needs to make a statement that they are not out of finals contention just yet.

“I think the deck will still be pretty good and the outfield is fast as always so there’s no reason why we can’t do that,” he said.

“But if we can get around 150 to 180 then I think we’d be in a pretty good position.

“I think finals are going to be pretty close really, but we’re just trying to take it one week at a time and if we keep winning then finals are still possible for us.

“Maybe get an outright win and things improve and our two-day game against Leagues coming up will be pretty important, but one loss and it’s probably over for us for this year, but we’re not trying to think like that.”
