HANWOOD retained the Griffith and District Cricket one-day title by default yesterday with the game called off after Griffith was hit with monsoon-conditions at 4pm.
The decider was in serious doubt to begin in the first place, with rain forcing officials to move the game from Exies No. 1 with its water-logged pitch not enabling play to go ahead.
But Exies No. 2 did not fare much better from the rain that created havoc with cricket across the weekend, with A and B grade cricket called off on Saturday afternoon.
With Exies batting first they were able to make the total of 85, but given the state of the outfield and the subsequent condition of the ball, it was a total on the board that Hanwood still had to try and run down.
Hanwood were given plenty of assistance early on by the Exies bowlers, with a hooping ball giving them plenty of extras in the way of wides.
But just a handful of overs into their chase, Hanwood and Exies were forced from the ground as torrential rain set in causing the end of the game and Hanwood to win, thanks to them being reigning champions and going through the season undefeated.
Hanwood skipper Jason Bertacco said it was disappointing not to be able to defend the trophy properly, but said his side deserved to win the cup given the effort they had put in all season.
"Full credit to our boys because we've had a great year to go undefeated in the one-dayers and I think we deserved to win," Bertacco said.
"I think we even proved that today (Sunday) even though the game got called off, we managed to bowl Exies out for 85 when the pitch was still good and dry, the outfield wasn't too good, but our boys proved that we put the time and effort in and we deserved the cup."
Brendan Hicken shook off the affects of a knee injury to go with the excellent efforts of Tim Matheson and Nathan Cunial with the trio all claiming three wickets. In reply, Exies looked like they were giving Hanwood an armchair ride to the title, but two excellent catches, the first to captain Brent Harrison and the next at short cover had swung back the momentum, but the rain set in soon after.
