GRIFFITH’S Open Creet Cup side will only have a week to turn its fortunes around after being defeated by Ardlethan/Barellan by five runs in a low scoring game at Exies No. 1 on Sunday.
With just two games left this Creet Cup season the loss all but rules out the Griffith side of playing in the finals, having failed to pick up a victory this season.
Winning the toss, Griffith looked to go on the attack and sent the joint-venture side in to bat with the decision paying immediate dividends as Coro’s Satvir Chahal struck.
The right-arm quick dismissed the first three batsmen, to have Ardlethan/ Barellan reeling at 3-41 as Chahal claimed 4-19 off nine with three maidens.
Dean Wynne and Andrew Potter combined during the middle of the Ardlethan/Barellan innings to keep the pressure on the visitors as wickets continued to tumble.
The pair claimed four wickets between them with Griffith captain Tom Webb wrapping up the tail to leave the home team needing only 96 for the win.
But apart from Michael Crosato, who scored 37 at the top of the order, Griffith failed to fire a shot in its reply as only two batsmen made it into double figures, with Wynne (17) unable to help launch a late offensive.
Griffith will not have to wait long to make amends for the loss.
This weekend it hosts Leeton, which is set to name a weakened side as the town’s better players turn out for the O’Farrell Cup challenge against Wagga.
