THEY were set the hardest chase of the summer, and despite their spirited effort Exies have fallen well short of the mammoth mark set for them by Coro in their two-day clash in Griffith Cricket.
Heading into the first week of the top-of-the-table clash all eyes were on the sides as a potential precursor to a finals clash in eight weeks' time, but the hype was taken out of the game when Coro recorded the highest total this season.
Needing an unlikely 312 for victory, twin brothers Justin and Jamie Winkler were only able to add six to the team's mid-week total before Justin was sent packing for just five when Satvir Chahal combined with Rob Rand.
Jamie and veteran Peter Davis then combined to put on 41 for the second wicket to get their innings back on track before Davis fell to Paul Plummer, who was again in excellent form for Coro.
Exies skipper Marc Tucker looked to play a captain's knock to help dig his side out of trouble, and at 31 he looked well on the way to changing the momentum of the game.
But Plummer again broke the partnership before it had the chance to become dangerous as Tucker's stumps were disturbed.
Josh Davis and Alex Tucker barely troubled the scorer before a promising partnership between the returning Derek Forner and Chris Mansell began to blossom.
With Forner on 23 and Mansell 26, Exies had the base to push for an unlikely victory, but again Coro snuffed out any chance of a win with two well-timed wickets, with Justin Moat (2-18) coming through just when his side needed him.
The win moves Coro into second place on the overall ladder, but they may only sit in that position for a week, with Yoogali in a good position at the half-way mark in its game against Hanwood.
