Cougars fight the Colt war

29 Jan, 2008 02:08 PM
Batting first, the Cougars knew they would have to play out of their skins to have a chance at beating one of the high flyers of the competition, but only three batsmen made it to double figures.

Jack Murphy (10), Luke Roberts (16) and Clinton Sanders (15) were the only Coro players to keep the scorer busy for any great length of time, as Hanwood demolished the Cougars to have them siting on 88 at the end of their innings. Matthew Patterson was the main destroyer for the Colts, taking 3-18 with good back up coming from Graham McGann (2-12)

Colts would have been feeling supremely confident of reeling in the total, if they played to their ability.

Chris McGann (29) and Graham McGann (34) then guided the side home with 14 not out from Daniel Bergamin clinching the win for the Hanwood side.

EXIES had the easiest of games against Leagues, winning by a massive nine wickets at Collina in B grade action.

Leagues fielded a below par side, with many of their usual B grade payers out of action and some C and D grade players receiving the call up.

Despite that, Leagues folded quickly with no batsmen troubling the Exies attack or the scorer for any great length of time.

In fact the lower half of the Leagues order resembled duck-season, such was the number of players failing to score, with six players putting their hand up to pack the kit thanks to their display with the bat.

The Exies bowlers took the opportunity to fill up their season wicket tallies, with Guy Kelly collecting the amazing figures of 6-4 from his five overs.

Kelly exposed the deficient defence of many of the Leagues players, by keeping the ball pitched up and on the stumps.

Michael Vitucci (3-9) and Bryan Henderson (1-12) completed the rout as Exies booked themselves an early afternoon off.

Paul Stanton tried to end the afternoon even quicker, smashing 26 from only 30 deliveries as Leagues were put out of their misery, with Exies only needing eight overs to pass the total.

CORO Cubs just scraped home in its day/night fixture last Friday against Yoogali, winning by two wickets.

The village side set up their total thanks to solid efforts from Theo Valeri (22), Mark Minato (45) and Nato Manuela (20) to eventually reach 131 at the end of their innings.

Stopping them from scoring more was Tim Rice, who was on the boil with the ball, to snare 4-15 from seven overs.

In response, Coro was in deep trouble early, slumping to 3-16, with the total looking bigger with every ball.

But a 42-run partnership between Jarrod Harpley (39) and Rice (22) got the innings moving forward again.

Ty Pascoe decided to keep the rescue effort going, notching up a classy 36, to help guide his side home for the points.

Jason Doidge tried his best to slow Coro down or stop them completely, taking a very handy 3-22 off five overs, but it wasn’t enough as the Cubs celebrated another win.

DIGGERS bowlers can take a bow, after helping set up an easy win for their side against Hanwood, with the club side winning by nine wickets.

With only two Hanwood players, Duncan McWhirter (25) and Andrew Kidd (11) making it into double figures, Diggers always knew they were going to have an easy day with the willow.

But it was the bowlers that did as their captain asked of them, especially Mark Bowman (3-4), Ryan Holcroft (2-20) and Matt Butcher (2-11), as Diggers demolished the Hanwood line up.

In response Diggers opening bat Mark Bowman looked like he wanted to score all 80 runs himself, racing to 55 from 62 with four boundaries and a six.

Brian Corner (21) played second fiddle, with only one Diggers wicket being lost on their way to the easiest of wins.
