LAST week when most kids his age are thinking of side steps, chip kicks and tries, Griffith’s Lachlan Condon has been thinking of cover drives, leg glances and boundaries
The all-round talented junior was a part of the PSSA NSW Boys’ cricket side that finished tied for first with Victoria at the Australian Championships in Darwin.
Competing against some of the most talented cricketers for his age, Lachlan opened the batting in all five of NSW
games with the highlight of the trip a well-crafted 47 on a fast outfield.
The multi-talented sportsman was also the only NSW batsman to make it into double figures in every game and was also used for his economical off-spin.
Lachlan said the trip was not only a positive because of his performances, but also as a fact finding mission, saying by simply observing other players in his side he was able to improve his own game.
“I learnt a lot from the other players not by asking them, but just watching how they play certain shots,” Lachlan said.
The talented right-hander also said he learnt about how to manage field settings and to “choke” opposing side out of the game if his side were defending low totals.
“I’m the captain for the school side and when we didn’t have many runs we (NSW) talked about trying to choke sides out of the game,” he said.
“I never thought about trying to make it hard for the top four (batsmen) to score and then when they get out, the next four will get out easily.
“We had two other spinners in our side and they got a lot of wickets because they threw the ball up and guys would charge them and get stumped.”
When he speaks of the inner workings of the game, it is obvious Lachlan is a deep thinker when it comes to cricket and the experience to play in the baggy blue of his state will do wonders for his experience and confidence.
NSW started off the tournament with a 39-run win over Northern Territory but fell to South Australia on day two, losing by three wickets.
However, the New South Welshman hit back in a big way, with a convincing 40-run win over Queensland and a 15 -run win over the ACT.
The baby blues rounded out the week with a 33-run win over arch rivals Victoria, to eventually tie with the southerners for the overall crown.
