Blackwells ready to face full house

30 Jan, 2008 01:28 PM
The Blackwells, as part of the Australian Southern Stars cricket team, will play the curtain raiser for the mens Twenty20 match between Australia and India.

John said while the girls have played on the hallowed turf of “The G” often, the scene that is likely to confront them on Friday will be something totally foreign to them.

“If it is indeed a sell out, as they were talking about during the (Adelaide men’s) Test match, then we are talking about 95,000 people,” John said.

When asked about the biggest crowd his girls had played in front of, John said the closest they have got to a full house was during a tour to India, when nearly 30,000 packed into a stadium.

John said he believes the setting won’t bother Alex and Kate as much as you would expect, claiming their years playing in the top women’s side in the country, and at times the world, has steeled them for the battle that will take place.

“I don’t believe it will get to them, they are pretty tough kids and I think it will only lift them up,” he said.

“I believe they don’t hear all that much of what is going on around them when they are out in the middle anyway.”

It will be a family affair for the Yenda twins, with much of their immediate family travelling to Melbourne to watch the girls turn out in the green and gold.

John said with his previous employment he was able to watch his offspring’s cricketing exploits across the world.

“I said to them once ‘now you’ve made the Australian team, I will try and watch as many of your games as I can’, and I have been very fortunate to watch them in Sri Lanka and in India.”

The girls have been in good form with the bat for the NSW Breakers, with both finishing at the top of the batting averages for the Women’s National Cricket League season.

The Southern Stars will tune up their skills for the Twenty20 against the national under 21 side, that recorded a 52-run win over the touring English side on Monday.
