NSW captain Alex Blackwell has led the NSW Breakers to their seventh straight Women’s National Cricket League title, after defeating the Victoria Spirit by 70 runs at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday.
The victory only enhances NSW’s dominance over the competition, with the side now having won 14 of the 16 WNCL titles that have been up for grabs.
However, the news was not all good for the Breakers, with the Twenty20 title still eluding them as they lost to the Spirit by 10 runs at Etihad Stadium last Thursday.
But inspired by the handing over of the “Baggy Blue” to 50 past NSW players, Yenda product Blackwell said the sense of occasion pushed her team towards the record win.
“It was very special to be able to win in front of so many
former NSW players. The history of NSW cricket is incredibly strong and we are proud to have added to that today,” Blackwell said.
Sent into bat in the 50-over decider, the Breakers found themselves in a world of trouble early at 2-2 with Leah Poulton lbw on the first ball of the match, then skipper Blackwell soon after.
However, a brilliant 144-run third wicket stand between Lisa Sthalekar and Rachael Haynes swung the game back into NSW’s favour. Haynes’ innings was full of class, lasting 139 balls and including 20 fours and two sixes, while the team finished on 7-310 – the highest team score in a WNCL Final.
The loss of Meg Lanning in the seventh over was an early blow for the Victorians’ chase, but a 103-run second-wicket partnership between Jessica Cameron and Elyse Villani put the game back on an even keel.
A late collapse gave the Breakers a strangle hold on the game, and while there was brief resistance from the Victorian tail, the Spirit were knocked over for 240, giving NSW a record-breaking seventh consecutive WNCL title.
The win ends another successful season the Breakers and Blackwell with NSW finishing on top of the ladder in both the WNCL and WT20 competitions, losing only one match all season.
