 A Spry Effort

A Spry Effort

31 Mar, 2008 10:30 AM
In a season where the Jets didn’t live up to their pre-season expectations, the opening speedster and at times swashbuckling batsmen led his club and Griffith in the O’Farrell Cup with distinction.

Spry said the results he gained this year were due to a more relaxed attitude toward his game.

“It was probably the best season I have had since I started playing A grade, when I was around 15, so about 12 or 13 years ago,” Spry said.

Spry picked up just about every individual award on Griffith cricket’s night of nights, including leading wicket taker and best bowling average in A grade, and most runs and wickets in representative cricket.

Spry’s 32 wickets at 11.75 was a massive 10 scalps ahead of the next best bowler in the competition, such was his unerring line and length.

Despite the avalanche of awards for his efforts, Spry said this season was not perfect, citing losses in the O’Farrell Cup and his early hamstring strain as two of the lower moments.

“I had that [hamstring strain] for a while, about a month or six weeks, and I was only able to bowl off about six steps,” Spry said.

“But after that came good, everything started to click.

“It [representative season] was a bit up and down, it was a disappointment to have the loss to Wyalong and then last up against Leeton.”

Spry said having to hand over the O’Farrell Cup to Leeton will keep the representative fire burning in his belly over the winter months, ahead of an all-out assault for the coveted trophy first game next year.

Spry will also be looking to help his beloved Yenda Jets after they fell short of making both the one and two-day finals series.

Spry said he wasn’t too concerned about next season’s prospects, saying the momentum gained from late season wins should mean the Yenda side is again at the top of the table.
