US star backflips

08 Mar, 2010 10:28 AM
WITH the opening round of the State League basketball season only two weeks away, Griffith has received some unexpected good news with American import Leon Rosborough agreeing to play with the Demons after recently reneging on the deal.

Two weeks ago Rosborough told team officials he could not come to Australia and play for the Demons, citing a medical condition relating to his braces.

While The Area News has learned the former Vanguard University student was suffering from a medical problem at the time, he has since agreed to honour his commitment to be the star player for the Demons' State League title run.

Griffith coach Andrew Cullen said while he wasn't shocked about Rosborough getting cold feet, he was happy his new recruit was now committed to the cause ahead of his arrival in the city on March 15.

"I was working a couple of different avenues over there (America) and I actually had two guys on the look out for me to find somebody to replace Leon, but the time schedule was getting too unrealistic," Cullen said.

"They (imported players) can be all systems go one minute and then a bit hesitant the next, but it's all worked out so that's the good thing.

"But people have got to realise how lucky we are to have Americans come out here and play for us, especially guys like Leon that were targeted by Vanguard to go and play for them."

Rosborough will be the second import from the United States to pull on a Demons' jersey since their reintroduction to the State League, after Levi Seekins made a big impact on court two years ago.

But despite the truncated timetable of getting to know his new teammates, Cullen believes his team's style of play will allow the forward to slot right into his designated role for the opening round game against the Moss Vale Magic.

"I know that's he's a fit guy and he'll have no dramas playing and we don't really play a lot of structure so there's not a lot for him
