Demons squad eyes off top spot

09 Jul, 2010 01:00 AM
DESPITE the Griffith Demons likely to field an under-strength squad tomorrow night, coach Andrew Cullen is backing his side to take down the Queanbeyan Roadrunners and claim top spot in State League basketball.

With just three games left in the regular season the Demons have the tantalising opportunity to have two bites of the finals' cherry in front of them if they finish in pole position.

Last weekend Griffith did not show the kind of form they are capable of but still had too much class for the likes of Wagga and Shoalhaven, who they easily defeated.

But Cullen said as the squad is likely to be missing Todd Howard, Andrew Cappello and potentially Corey Ryan, they will need find another gear against the Roadrunners.

"Again it's a decimated squad but we'll put together a very good squad," Cullen said.

"Especially without key players like Corey and my brother (Nick Cullen) there, we're going to need output by some guys that have not been putting up constant numbers.

"We're going to have to have a bit of luck go our way as well to beat them, but we have a quiet confidence about us at the moment and if there's any team that's going to go down there and beat them, it's us.

"We've still got two games after this that are important as well, and really from now on every game is like a grand final.

"Especially if we do well on Saturday, we'll need to win the last three games if we want to finish on top spot."

In a boost for Griffith, Leon Rosborough had one of his best games of the season last Saturday night at West End Stadium, with the former Vanguard University forward putting up his most complete performance this season.

Rosborough was dominant on the boards early in the game, but

he found his was to the basket at the free throw line with relative ease to top-score for the night with 29 points.

While Cullen admitted Queanbeyan traditionally pose the biggest threat to his side, he continue to back his squad saying their side's two clashes this season should mean the hosts are the one's in danger of losing.

"Whoever we face we seem to play to their standard, so I don;t think there's anything wrong with thinking we can take them down," he said.

"We've led them at half-time both times we've played them and the time we got done, we had players in major foul trouble and we had nothing go our way all night

"So when you really look at it we should have been two up against them already this season."
