Demons court US stars

09 Jan, 2012 12:00 AM
GRIFFITH has been overwhelmed with choice for an American import this year, with three star players making it clear they want to pull on a Demons' jersey this State League basketball season.

The now long-standing connections the team has made in the United States look set to bare fruit again, with Demons coach Andrew Cullen deep in negotiations with a trio of players who could all add to the local talent.

However, Cullen will be faced with a tough decision in the coming weeks, with only one player likely to be chosen to help Griffith's charge towards another finals appearance.

"We're in such a good spot now that we've been offered three Americans from different channels in their system," Cullen said.

"It's great that such a good program is now up and running for Griffith, I've been approached by the three guys from different sources, that if we can get any of them onboard."

Each player is cut from a different cloth and will offer the Demons their own unique weapons on both sides of the ball.

The early front-runner is a 205cm centre who is another Vanguard University alumni and is rumoured to have played at Continental Basketball Association, a professional league only slighty behind the NBA in standard.

Another candidate is a 188cm swingman who will help the Demons offence from mid-range to the three-point line while the final possible Demon is a 182cm point guard.

Cullen said the centre would give his local big men in Adam O'Callaghan and Corey Ryan valuable assistance down low as well as help his rotation of players on the bench.

"Even if Corey was able to play every game not just the home games this season, I still need a big guy, but at the moment we need a bit of everything with the extended three-point line.

"Before shooting the three was probably a strength of ours but now it's not so strong, but certainly I need a big (tall player).

"The shooting guard or forward would also suit this team down to the ground, everything I have been able to find out about him tells me that he would suit this team down to the ground."

Asked if any of the potentials have baggage with them, Cullen said the centre did have a history of minor knee injuries, but was not worried with that as they pursued his services for 2012.

"If that's true then that's still not a concern for us because those kind of injuries often come when you play 30 games a season, and even with our finals you're looking at 20 - it's not going to be a factor."

Cullen said despite another American set to join the team the local players will in fact see more game time, especially the younger players, as the next generation of State League players continues their development.

"The younger blokes have all had an extra season under their belts, but these American guys are all looking quite good," he said.

"But then I'm also going to have more home games this year, well I meant to, which means less travel, so things are looking really positive."
