A POLICEWOMAN was allegedly bitten and other officers were spat on and punched during a wild brawl at a 16th birthday party in Griffith on Saturday night.
Ten people have been charged in the wake of the ugly incident, which erupted after gatecrashers invaded the celebration at a hall in Daines Street just after 11pm.
Officers were confronted by a series of fights at the venue, and were allegedly set upon by members of the group while trying to restore order to the crowd of more than 100 revellers.
Four police were later treated at Griffith Base Hospital – one for a bite wound, another for a swollen jaw and two were forced to undergo contamination testing after having blood spat in their face.
Inspector Tony Reneker from Griffith Police branded the behaviour of the crowd as “disgraceful” and said the situation had the potential to become far worse.
“That many underage party affected by alcohol is concerning but so too is the fact that somebody has obviously supplied them with the alcohol,” Insp Reneker said.
“The behaviour of some in the crowd was disgraceful and it was the type of incident we would normally see at a licenced venue late at night.”
All up, 13 officers were needed to bring the situation under control.
Insp Reneker said a number of parents turned up at the party after the incident and were “shocked and horrified” at what they saw.
Those arrested ranged in age from 16 to 18.
They will front court next month on a range of charges including assaulting police, intimidation and affray.
