Women vow to put end to poverty

10 Mar, 2010 10:21 AM
THE heavens may have opened over the weekend but the deluge couldn't dampen the spirit of Griffith's International Women's Day brunch on Sunday.

Around 70 local women turned out to celebrate the annual event, with this year's theme aiming to empower women to help end poverty.

Griffith City Council's communications and community development manager Alison Balind said the brunch, held in the gardens of the Cottage Gallery, was a rousing success and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.

"The numbers were a little less than what we expected as the rain kept some people away but we still had many come out to enjoy the day," Mrs Balind said.

The day's speakers helped carry the theme of empowering women to eradicate poverty, with Judy Callinan talking about her experiences as a volunteer in Cambodia and Mongolia and Iva Quarisa describing her work with women and children in Uganda.

"It was an opportunity for everyone to get together and be inspired by the speakers; to do something for someone and to let the women know that they can help somebody in need," Mrs Balind.

While the brunch was free to all who attended, participants were asked to donate a gold coin for charity.

"We donated the proceeds from the breakfast to St Vincent's because they help people in our own communities who are impacted by tough financial constraints," Mrs Balind said.

International Wom-en's Day is an internationally recognised annual event and seeks to honour women's advancement and equality the world over.
