Two teens arrested over theft

01 Mar, 2010 10:51 AM
POLICE have arrested two teens for allegedly stealing $10,000 worth of property including a substantial amount of cigarettes from a local business.

The arrests are the latest in a series made after Griffith was hit by a crime spree including stolen vehicle, theft from motor vehicle and break and enter offences.

Two 15-year-old boys were charged with aggravated break and enter for the $10,000 theft, while one of the boys was also charged over the December 27 robbery of a pizza delivery driver.

They were refused bail and appeared before Griffith Children's Court on Friday.

The breakthrough came just one day after a 17-year-old and 16-year-old were charged for their alleged role in a break and enter rampage on Monday morning.

Griffith Local Area Command crime manager, Detective Inspector Paul Smith said the public had been instrumental in the arrests.

"The information we've received from the public over the last few weeks has been exceptional ?(it seems) they'd had enough and really pulled together," he said.

"Most of the arrests we've made have been due to information from residents."

Now the police need help again.

Residents who've been offered packets of cigarettes by people on the street in the past week are asked to contact Griffith police on 6969 4299.
