GRIFFITH Central management are confident the centre has finally turned a corner, with the announcement of three new stores to open before Christmas.
Despite eight remaining vacancies and a tough first year, centre manager Cheryl Wood said the new fashion stores – Body C, American Cargo and Mati – will provide a boost heading into the holiday period.
“Since opening, the number one request has been for stores that cater for young fashion,” she said.
“It is very exciting for us to be able to announce their opening during our first birthday celebrations.”
Work on the new stores will begin in the next few weeks, Ms Wood said.
“Operators of the new stores have been working around the clock to get all the necessary plans in place,” she said.
Griffith Chamber of Commerce president Craig Tilston said the announcement was not only great news for the centre, but also for Griffith.
“I think it is a good sign that new businesses still, even during tough economic times, see an upside to opening up in Griffith,” he said.
“It will mean an increase in employment opportunities, with more jobs likely to be on offer.
“While some local businesses might disagree that more fashion stores were needed here, I think it is good because it offers more choice. Choice is important.”
Ms Wood said the focus was now on finding suitable tenders for food-related stores.
“We are working really hard to lease the remaining spots,” she said.
“We really want a bakery, butcher and a fruit and veg store to compliment the food end of the centre.
“We have been in talks with local stores and chain stores, but so far nothing has been confirmed.
“The owners remain committed to finding the right mix of stores to fit in with the centre.”
