Seminar provides food for thought

08 Mar, 2010 10:06 AM
LOCAL businesses learnt how to survive change, diversify and go green at the Strengthening Resilient Economies seminar held in Griffith over the weekend.

Seventy industry professionals took part in the two-day seminar, which aimed to teach participants how to adapt and change their businesses in uncertain economic times.

Michael Ryan, principal consultant at Griffith's Boost Associates, said the seminar was a great place to network and also pick-up new ideas that had worked for other businesses.

"It's been a good seminar. There's a wide variety of people here and some of the ideas presented are good food for thought," he said.

Mr Ryan was also impressed with the range of speakers the seminar offered, which included former NSW Opposition leader John Brogden, acclaimed author and broadcaster Peter Fitzsimons, Sunrise chairman Gerry Lawson and senior consultant of AEC Group Michael Campbell.

Griffith City Council's economic development manager Stephen Joyce said all the participants were very engaged and responded well to the seminar.

"It's an opportunity to work on your business rather than with your business," Mr Joyce said. "If they take one thing back with them then they've achieved something."

Even though council was disappointed with local businesses' response to the seminar Mr Joyce said they would be looking to hold a similar seminar again in the future.

Mr Joyce also said that the enthusiastic response from out-of-town businesses meant the seminar was also a chance to showcase what Griffith had to offer.

"The dinner we had at the Gemini featured all local produce; quail, lamb and vegetables, and the caterers we used over the weekend were all local," he said. There was also strategic product placement across the weekend featuring everything from Albury-bottled water to Steggles chicken.
