POLICE will review surveillance footage that could help to reveal the culprit behind counterfeit money being used in Griffith.
Police have confirmed that counterfeit $50 notes were presented to a number of businesses within Griffith recently but have not disclosed how many businesses were targeted.
Inspector Tony Reneker said “police have received a lot of assistance from local businesses”.
“We expect we will be arresting the offender in the near future,” Inspector Reneker said.
On some occasions the notes were not immediately suspect, as was the case with Rossies where a suspect $50 note was presented last week.
Rossies owner Tony Jones
said while the dodgy note was not immediately picked up by the staff member, the person believed responsible had been captured on the store’s surveillance.
“I have handed over the fake note to police and they have requested footage from the store security camera,” Mr Jones said.
“From that we think we have a pretty good idea who was behind it.”
Police have advised anyone who suspects they have had a counterfeit note presented to place the note in an envelope and contact the police immediately.
Handle the note as little as possible and write down any details, particularly descriptions of suspects that will help investigators.
Anyone with information regarding these crimes can contact Griffith police on 6969 4299, or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
