Permanent police chief finally named

Inspector Michael Rowan, currently a senior officer at Albury, is expected to take control of the local area command late next month.

Griffith’s acting commander Tony Reneker said while the new police chief will face a number of challenges, he will inherit a force at its strongest in years.

“Police numbers are at their strongest in five years and Inspector Rowan’s appointment will add further stability to the command,” Inspector Reneker said.

“There’s been a general reduction in crime over the past year and one of his big challenges will be to maintain that while maintaining the staffing numbers.”

Insp Reneker said the new commander was a “very capable” officer, who had a “consultative” leadership style and was well respected by peers.

“He has a great deal of experience in country commands and will be very well suited to the Griffith local area command,” he said.

It is the first time Insp Rowan has filled such a senior role.

His appointment to the rank of Superintendent was confirmed by Commissioner Andrew Scipione on Thursday.

Former Griffith commander Steve Nicholas retired for medical reasons in late 2006.
