Patients get sinking feeling

30 Jul, 2010 12:00 AM
PATIENTS at Griffith Base Hospital are being forced to go without plugs and face washers, it has been revealed.

Former Griffith mayor Jim McGann, who spent six days in the hospital recently, described the situation as a "bloody disgrace".

In an alarming sign of the resourcing crisis at the local hospital, Mr McGann was forced to use paper to plug the hole while he was shaving after discovering none of the sinks had plugs.

"It's a bloody disgrace," he said.

"I wanted to have a shave and clean my teeth but the only way I could keep water in was by shoving paper in the bottom of the sink.

"You don't get any face washers either, just a paper towel."

Mr McGann, who had nothing but praise for the work of the nurses, said the overall state of the hospital was "extremely concerning".

"I couldn't believe it. They keep talking about saving water but the hospital doesn't even have plugs so you can imagine the amount of water that is just running down the drain," he said.

"You can't blame the people working in the system; as far as I'm concerned nurses are definitely the people who earn their money but I think the state government should be abolished.

"Here it is, an election and they are all just talking through their hats about health. Surely a plug isn't much to ask for when you are sick."

Integrated service manager for Griffith Health Service Ian Power admitted plugs were no longer available for patients to use but blamed theft on the move.

"Men are encouraged to bring in electric razors to minimise cuts which may result in infections," he said.

"Plugs were previously supplied but were continually being taken, even with chains attached.

"Patients are supplied with denture mugs which can be filled with water to clean teeth.

"The hospital does supply disposable face washers."
