Parents foster top award

29 Jan, 2008 02:30 PM
Recognised for their 11-year commitment to raising foster children, the Yenda couple were modest about their achievement and said they wanted to share the commendation with their “great kids”.

“The children in our home are welcoming and willing to share their room and everything else so they deserve this award too,” Jane said.

“Also, they say it takes a community to raise a child and we couldn’t have done this without the community.”

Working as a teacher and a teacher’s aide during the day, the couple spend very little time away from children but love the community work they do.

“People are blinded sometimes and don’t really know what’s going on. Some people have blinkers on,” Jamie said of those who refuse to believe foster parents are needed in Griffith.

“New foster parents are needed all the time, especially because of the burnout suffered. Hopefully something good can come from this if more people have a think about doing it.”

Jamie’s sister Nicole Hurley was more than willing to sing the couple’s praises.

“They are definitely worthy recipients. It’s really amazing what they do for the kids,” Ms Hurley said.
