LOCAL police were commended for their service to the community at an award ceremony held last Thursday.
Griffith Local Area Command presented 54 awards to officers, former officers and volunteers for their years of service and also some special commendations for performance in the line of duty.
Sergeant Gerard Ryan and Senior Constable Luke Orton were awarded with a Griffith Local Area Command citation for their part in a major drug bust at Hillston while conducting a routine RBT.
Senior Constable Anthony Paulson, who arrived in Griffith last June, received a commissioner's certificate of merit for his part in a siege near Broken Hill where a man had stabbed his wife nine times and shot at police.
Further special commendations went to Sergeant Troy Kauter, Senior Constable William Beeche, Detective Senior Constable Kelly Henderson, Sergeant Jason Clark, Leading Senior Constable Mooney and Senior Constable Sonya Wiles.
Inspector Craig Thorp said the commendations showed that anything can happen in their line of work even when performing routine operations.
"We're very lucky to have this calibre of officers in our command," Insp Thorp said. "These award ceremonies are very important as they are a way to recognise the good work of our staff and their commitment to their duties."
Mayor Mike Neville said he was honoured to be at the ceremony and proud of Griffith police for the role they play in protecting the local community.
"Awards like those presented to Sergeant Ryan and Senior Constable Orton have the ability to inspire other local officers who were at the ceremony," he said.
"I was also impressed to see three probationary officers accepted into the command. It's a good sign for the community that these young officers put their hands up to come here."
