‘My neighbours are driving me crazy’

28 May, 2008 11:17 AM
Rose Gibbons and her 13-year-old son moved into the public housing home in Field Place 10 months ago and say constant threats, taunts and even physical abuse have left them scared for their safety and desperate for a transfer.

According to Ms Gibbons, despite numerous pleas to Housing NSW and a long list of complaints to police, she is no closer to getting an emergency transfer from the once quiet cul-de-sac.

“It started off ok. They used to come over and ask for sugar, ask if they could make a phone call,” Ms Gibbons said.

“But it changed once I started saying no and now it’s just constant abuse and harassment.

“People won’t let their kids out to play on the street anymore because they’re scared they’ll get abused.”

Mrs Gibbons said she had made more than 30 complaints to police about the family and sought a number of apprehended violence orders.

She requested an emergency transfer from the local Housing NSW office two months ago but was refused.

“I was told I didn’t fit the criteria but surely what I’m going through is enough,” she said.

“They just told me to go and rent privately or move to a women’s refuge.”

A Housing NSW spokesman said the department was attempting to help Ms Gibbons with her issues.

“Housing NSW has been aware of issues in the Field Place area since January 2008 and has been working with the families in this cul-de-sac, as well as other agencies such as DoCS, Department of Education, NSW Police and Centacare Griffith to try and reach a resolution,” he said.

“Housing has a zero tolerance towards anti-social behaviour and will take action against any tenant who breaches the conditions of his or her tenancy

agreement.”

Ms Gibbons’ neighbours had a hearing scheduled in the Consumer Trader and Tenancy Tribunal (CTTT) yesterday.
