A CANDIDATE respresenting a party that is anti-abortion and anti-climate change has joined the race for the seat of Riverina.
Sylvia Mulholland of Lockhart will be representing the Christian Democratic Party (CDP) as the eighth candidate in the election.
She was approached by the local CDP branch to join the seven other candidates campaigning before the election on August 21.
"I have always thought this party had something the other parties didn't," she said.
"The party upholds the Christian values the country was built on, which is something that is a bit hard to hold on to these days and that is part of why I wanted to stand."
Mrs Mulholland is a mother of four boys and has been involved in the CDP for about ten years.
"When you have smaller parties, larger parties can't manipulate people and voters can make a quality decision on their own," she said.
"We give people the freedom to vote according to conscience and not just voting on what a party dictates."
Mrs Mulholland has worked as a school teacher and is a Lockhart shire councillor.
She said not many people are aware of the CDP and she is determined to make the party and its values known.
"We are pro-life and want people to adopt children rather than have abortions," she said.
"We promote education with home-based community partnerships so what is reinforced at schools is taken back to families and communities."
Mrs Muholland and the CDP have a strong stance on environment and the debate on climate change.
"The whole emphasis on global warming just causes fear.
"What is happening is a natural cycle and it has happened before."
The CDP also supports the decrease of global imports to strengthen Australian farmers and their produce.
