MP unfazed by ejection from parliament

29 Feb, 2008 08:41 AM
The Murrumbidgee MP was at it again on Wednesday, being ejected from the parliament for refusing to bow down to orders from the speaker of the house.

The exchange came during heated debate about the state government’s handling of developer donations.

“As opposition leader of the house, I made a point of order when (planning minister) Frank Sartor failed to answer the questions put to him,” Mr Piccoli said.

“I kept insisting and I was told to sit down and I wouldn’t.

“My philosophy has always been it’s better to live on your feet than die on your knees, and I wouldn’t let them just shut me down over such an important issue.

“I’m elected to stand up for what I think is right and if that brings consequences occasionally, then so be it.

“I have no regrets.”

Mr Piccoli has been ejected from the chambers three times previously, most notably in October 2004 when he gave then-premier Bob Carr the “two finger salute”.

But while Mr Piccoli claimed he was just doing his job, local Labor MLC Tony Catanzariti said it was symptomatic of a member out of touch with his constituents.

“This is typical of Adrian, he’ll never learn,” Mr Catanzariti said.

“He forgets who he is supposed to be representing. He’s not supposed to be representing Adrian, he’s supposed to be representing the people of the Murrumbidgee and he should realise that by now.

“I think the whole thing is a ploy to try and show people he’s standing up for them when being a good local member is about a lot more than stunts.

“It’s about being there when it counts and Adrian simply isn’t.”
