GRIFFITH’S mayor has backed the call for the city to have its own song.
Cr Dino Zappacosta described the idea, put forward a fortnight ago by local songwriter Hugh Crawford, as wonderful.
“I think it’s a great idea. The song should portray the spirit of Griffith as in the people’s willingness to make this the best place on earth,” he said.
“A song that encompasses the enthusiasm, kindness, freedom, friendship, progressiveness and multiculturalism that exists here would be a great way of giving people a good impression of Griffith.
“Council would be very keen to support a song in any way, including financial support if needed.”
Ironically Mr Crawford actually issued the musical challenge for residents to submit lyrics and music in an effort to teach bickering council members a lesson.
He said he was pleased with the response so far and hopes the two verses and a chorus received anonymously will inspire the city.
“What we have so far is just a start and is far from a finished product. Something like this would have taken around an hour to come up with,” he said. “As the person who penned it said it’s really just an idea that they hope will provoke other people to do better.
“We’ve had good response from the music community, who say they think it’s a great idea and are keen to support it. Now I need the good citizens of Griffith to give it a go and send in some lyrics, even if it’s just a line to two.”
