THE city's first volunteer referral service will be launched at the Griffith Regional Art Gallery this week.
The Griffith Volunteer Referral Service will be officially launched by councillor Peter Taylor on Friday, March 12 at noon.
The service was established after a community meeting was held last year to determine how to engage and create opportunities for Griffith's multicultural community.
Griffith City Council community services development coordinator Peta Dummett has issued an open invitation to members of the community to attend the launch.
"From that public meeting, where we had over 50 people attend, it was agreed that this service was vital for Griffith," she said.
"Griffith's diverse community brings with it both professional and creative ideas that are untapped resources.
"Add to this the increasing requirement of agencies and committees to secure reliable volunteers to deliver valuable support to individuals.
"I hope lots of people will come along and help us launch this great service."
La Festa is just around the corner and Ms Dummett said the festival was a prime example of an event in need of volunteers.
"There are a real range of different needs out there," she said.
"The likes of La Festa require the support of volunteers once a year compared to services like Riding for the Disabled, which depends on volunteer committee and support for clients on a daily and weekly basis.
"The new service has been set up to coordinate these events by registering both the volunteers and the agency/committee that requires volunteers to succeed.
"The centre also enables people to contribute to community through sharing their skills and knowledge plus it opens avenues for developing new skills, for either life-long learning or to improve employment prospects."
The Griffith Volunteer Referral Service will be run from Griffith Neighbourhood House.
