Kokoda trek talk to be held

22 Mar, 2010 10:50 AM
BILLED as a life-changing experience, something every Australian should do is the venerable Kokoda Trail.

A test of strength of mind, body and character, it has priven a challenge to all Griffith locals who have answered the call.

Australia's leading expert on the Kokoda Trail, Charlie Lynn, is coming to Griffith tomorrow to hold an information session about the trek for any who are interested.

Mr Lynn has walked the Kokoda Trail 58 times and was the instigator of the venture having "rediscovered" the trail in 1991.

"It's an Australian pilgrimage in many ways," Mr Lynn said.

"Those who take it learn a lot about themselves, about the history of the trail and the campaign, the people living near the trail and about each other."

When Mr Lynn first visited the trail it had fallen into disrepair and many Australian people had no idea it existed.

As a veteran himself, Mr Lynn understood the importance Kokoda had to Australia's history and so, with some help, he mapped out the trail and started to take treks across it.

"We focus greatly on the military history during the trek so the people gain a greater awareness of the sacrifices that have been made on behalf of them by the veterans," Mr Lynn said.

"We are the custodians of the spirit of Kokoda and we have to make sure it is never forgotten again."

The trek, set for the September school holidays, is being organised by Matthew Kenny from Speshil Sports in conjunction with Charlie Lynn's Adventure Kokoda trekking company.

"We're looking to get 15-25 people to take the trek together, we have about six or seven at the moment," Mr Kenny said.

"We got Charlie to come down and speak because he's the number one guy who knows about Kokoda and he even mapped it out."

Anyone who is interested in finding out more about the Kokoda Trail is welcome to attend the information night tomorrow from 7pm at the Exies Sporties.
