Last weekend the Griffith Aero Club took Doreen Taylor up for her first flying lesson and the 87-year-old was able to tick another aeronautical accomplishment off her list.
"It was really interesting and very enjoyable," she said.
"The controls are quite different to what you think they would be.
"It was wonderful being 6000 feet up in the clouds sitting on top of a pool of clouds."
Griffith Aero Club president Bob Frauenfelder said Mrs Taylor's accomplishment proved that flying really was for everyone.
"It shows anyone from 14 to 87 can fly a plane and enjoy doing it," Mr Frauenfelder said.
"We're really trying to encourage the young kids to get into aviation and possibly look at careers in aviation."
Kirsty Finn is one of the club's younger members at 21 and, after years of support from the club, is on the cusp of getting her full pilot's licence.
"I used to be a very shy and quiet person and never had much self-confidence," she said.
"The first time I went up with an instructor they let me grab the controls and told me I could do it and it showed me I can, which was very encouraging.
"The Aero Club has been very supportive in helping me get my licence and I hope one day to go into commercial flying."
Ms Finn said she was proof that anyone who wanted to could become a pilot.
"I've got about two weeks before I get my full licence," she said.
"I'm nobody special, you don't have to be really brainy to become a pilot if I can do it, anybody can."
The Griffith Aero Club is holding a fundraiser to help more children get into aviation. Tickets are $10 each and the first prize is $4000 worth of pilot training.
