A SYDNEY fitness instructor who was busted on the Newell Highway allegedly carrying nearly 25 kilograms of marijuana in her car has been denied bail by a Griffith magistrate.
Judith Rosemary McMinn, 47, from the Sydney suburb of Mayfair, was pulled over for speeding by a highway patrol officer at West Wyalong at about 3.45pm on Wednesday.
As the officer spoke to the woman, he caught a strong waft of marijuana in the hire car and began a search.
Much to his surprise, he allegedly unearthed 34 large bags of cannabis weighing 24.11kg and with an estimated street value of $150,000.
The woman was charged with possessing and supplying a prohibited drug and taken back to Griffith Police Station for questioning, but refused to answer any questions.
She fronted Griffith Bail Court yesterday and was formally refused bail. She did not enter a plea and will re-appear in Wagga Local Court on August 2.
Police believe the woman was moving the marijuana from Melbourne to Brisbane along the notorious drug running corridor.
Griffith crime manager Paul Smith praised the work of the arresting officer and said the case highlighted the relentless nature of the police war on illegal drugs.
“It was exceptional work by the officer and we’re talking about a very large quantity of drugs,” Detective Inspector Smith said.
“We have a lot of intelligence that suggests that highways within our command are routes for the
transportation of prohibited drugs between states.
“Although these drugs were moving through our local area, it certainly strengthens our resolve to continue targeting illegal drugs within Griffith and surrounds.
“We again call on the public to assist in providing information about drug suppliers.”
