'Cop crash' driver appeals jail term

06 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
A GRIFFITH man who nearly ran down a police officer has launched an appeal against the severity of his jail sentence.

Scott Andrew Price, of Willandra Avenue, pleaded guilty in Griffith Local Court last week to dangerous driving, drive while under the influence, failing to stop for a breath test, taking a vehicle without permission and driving without a licence.

Last September, police were conducting radar tests on Jondaryan Avenue when they saw Price speeding towards them in a white sedan, which was owned by his partner.

In an attempt to stop Price, an officer walked out into the middle of his lane but the 58-year-old kept driving straight at her and she was forced to jump out of the way to avoid being hit.

Police began pursuing Price, who sped up and overtook two cars before turning sharply on to Willandra Avenue, pulling into a driveway and running into a house.

When police approached the house Price’s partner, who claimed not to know who he was, said he had run out the front door, but after telling her they would search the house Price came to the door and was arrested.

Asked why he drove at police, Price said it was because he didn’t have his licence.

Police could not administer a breath test to Price because he was at his own house but the officers noted his speech was slurred and his eyes were bloodshot and Price admitted to drinking five full-strength beers that day.

In the facts tendered to court, police said Price’s driving posed an extreme danger to the community and his actions had also made the officer fear for her safety because he had driven directly at her, forcing her to take evasive action.

Price was sentenced to four months’ jail and disqualified

from driving for 18 months for dangerous driving, placed on a two year good behaviour bond and fined $500 for taking a vehicle without permission, fined $500 for driving while not licensed and fined $200 for failing to stop for a breath test.

An appeal against the severity of the sentences for dangerous driving, taking a vehicle without permission and driving without a licence were lodged by Price last week.
