Club to stage crisis talks

08 Feb, 2012 06:00 AM
THE embattled Yoogali Catholic Club (YCC) will hold a crisis meeting of members next week in a bid to save itself from financial obliteration.

The club, one of the city’s most popular wedding reception venues, is walking a fiscal tightrope after it posted a $150,000 loss last year and the St George bank put a stop on its offer of credit.

The board has also been forced to dramatically cut back the club’s operating hours and staffing levels.

A letter has been posted to the YCC’s approximately 1000 members urging them to attend next Thursday night’s meeting or risk seeing the club close its doors.

YCC vice-president “Fluff” Salvestro said the board was forced to go cap-in-hand to a group of loyal members recently in a bid to raise a $10,000 loan to pay a creditor who “was getting nasty”.

“We just need members to support the club,” Mr Salvestro said.

“We’ve lost four weddings because we couldn’t guarantee 100 per cent we would be open and we need some certainty.

“A lot of blokes when you see them down the street say, ‘you should do this, you should do that’ but we need them to front up and take some responsibility for it.

“We have to ride out the storm and find a bank that will support us a bit more.”

He said the club’s poker machine revenue had been “hammered”, dropping from about $25,000 a month profit pre-smoking laws to about $2000 a month now.

Directors of the club had resorted to cleaning the facility to cut down on overheads, he said.

And in a move to generate more cash, the board will put a prime parcel of land adjoining the main building on the market from February 25.

“The block isn’t mortgaged and it’s one we used to play touch on but that isn’t being used now,” Mr Salvestro said.

“It’s in a prime location between the club and the school and is zoned to do just about anything with.”

The club’s woes come as both the Hanwood Sports Club and Yenda Diggers Club battle to keep the books in the black.

The Yoogali Catholic Club members meeting will be held at the club from 8pm on Thursday, February 16.
