Ceremony to mark apology

08 Feb, 2010 10:15 AM
GRIFFITH'S Aboriginal community will hold a ceremony this week to mark the second anniversary of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's apology to the Stolen Generations.

The service will be held at Jubilee Oval on February 12 from 11am, with mayor Mike Neville and Inspector Tony Reneker from the Griffith Local Area Command to deliver addresses at midday. Local Aboriginal community members will also share some special words.

Mr Rudd's apology on February 13, 2008 for the "profound grief, suffering and loss" experienced by Aborigines was a landmark moment in the reconciliation movement.

Steve Collins from the Aboriginal Medical Service urged all Griffith residents to come and commemorate the historic day.

"We'll have traditional games and other fun activities for the youth and children, and they will also have the opportunity to learn from our elders."
