Bilbul bell's final toll

19 Dec, 2011 12:00 AM
THE students have all been dismissed and the final bell has tolled for Bilbul Public School.

Students, parents and staff gathered for a final day of fun and an emotional farewell on Friday, though principal Duncan Adams said everyone is optimistically looking forward to a bright new start next year.

"We're a bit nostalgic and very reflective on the year, but we've celebrated 90 years of proud public education," Mr Adams said.

"We've gone out with our heads held high and our integrity still intact."

Parents and staff met in October and made the unanimous decision to close the school after factoring dwindling enrolments and their desire for the best education for the students.

Parent and teachers aid Sandra Wetzel said while she was "a bit emotional" about the final day of school, she was happy to be ending the year on a "good note".

"We've organised it in a positive way for students which is important," Mrs Wetzel said.

"They've all had their transitions and they're pretty excited."

Her daughter Hannah, 8, will move on to Yenda Public School where she has many friends from preschool.

After a whole-school fun day which included pony rides, a jumping castle, laser tag and plenty of tasty treats, students each collected a supply pack to start their new school year with.

Mr Adams then called each of the 14 students up one by one to ring the bell for the final time.
