A HANWOOD man clocked at 227kmh on Burley Griffin Way in May has narrowly dodged a jail sentence after fronting Griffith Local Court last week.
Matthew Scott Lodding, 21, of Pedley Road, Hanwood, pleaded guilty to one charge of driving at a dangerous speed following an incident on May 30.
The court heard Lodding was driving his Nissan Maxima on Burley Griffin Way near Binya at about 10.40pm when he overtook an unmarked police car at 150kmh and accelerated ahead.
Highway patrol officers pursued the vehicle, gauging Lodding’s speed at 227kmh in a 100kmh zone and 204kmh in the 80kmh zone through Binya township.
Police called off the pursuit when speeds became too
dangerous.
But minutes later a security guard at De Bortoli Wines took down the registration number of Lodding’s car as it sped into the winery’s driveway, and police headed straight to Lodding’s Hanwood address.
Magistrate Anthony Murray gave Lodding an eight-month suspended jail sentence, suspended his licence for two years and ordered him to attend a sober drivers’ program.
Arresting Sergeant Angus Duncombe said the tough sentence was warranted.
“At the speed he was going, he would have had absolutely no chance if wildlife had run out onto the road,” Sgt Duncombe said. “Obviously the magistrate has recognised how dangerous it was an imposed a suspended sentence for his moment of madness.”
